Decks have to be built to code for your safety,   Number of footings per size of deck, length vs. materials used, metal connectors, type of screws used are just a few things you should know.

I have seen contractors try to save money but using cheaper screws that rust, and not using metal connectors to secure beams, posts, joist and using nails to hold down the decking boards which should be screwed.   Footing have to be a min. of 42" deep so the deck will not lift during cold winter months. While on a front door estimate I  notice this customer deck had the down rails of a Trex deck upside down and all the screws exposed.
